Serves 2 – 4
1 hour with marinating
1 lb flank steak, trimmed
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
¼ cup orange juice (sour orange juice if you have it)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon ground star anise
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper (or more, to taste)
Pinch of salt
3 small tangerines, halved and tossed with a bit of vegetable oil
(I also grilled whole carrots and red onion for this. That was just what I had on hand. Serve it with whatever.)
1. Combine all of the ingredients except the tangerines, in a shallow dish or large sealable plastic bag and marinate for up to 1 hour at room temperature.
2. To cook the steak, remove from the marinade and either grill or pan sear or broil for 6 minutes. Baste with the marinade, flip, add the tangerines to the grill (or pan or broiler) and continue cooking everything for 4 more minutes for medium rare.
3. Let the meat rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving with steamed rice and the charred tangerines (to squeeze over the meat).
